Natal and Neonatal teeth

“Natal teeth” are teeth present at birth. “Neonatal teeth” are teeth that have erupted within the first month of life. Natal teeth are three times more common than neonatal teeth. Incidences are around 1:2000. Most of the natal and neonatal teeth are prematurely erupted, whereas few are supernumerary teeth. Mostly erupted from the lower jaw (mandible). Other than that, it also erupts from the maxilla (upper jaw) but in very rare cases.

Causes:

Genetic – Autosomal dominant inheritance.
Endocrine disturbances- pituitary, thyroid, gonads.
Increased resorption of overlying bone.
Poor maternal health, maternal fever, maternal endocrine disturbances

Syndrome associated with natal and neonatal teeth:

Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome
Hallermann-Streiff syndrome
Rubistein-Taybi syndrome
Pierre-Robin syndrome
Pallister-Hall syndrome

Complications associated with natal teeth:

Feeding problem- Refusal to feed, painful suckling
Growth retardation, poor weight gain, failure to thrive
Dehydration
Ulceration on the under surface of tongue
Maternal nipple injury
Aspiration of teeth
Swallowing of teeth

Conservative management
